District Four 2023 Arts Festival – February 11, 2023
The Burlington Woman’s Club hosted the 2023 District Four Arts Festival at the Kernodle Senior Center in Burlington. An outstanding part of the day was seeing the creative centerpieces on each table. They used the GFWC-NC District President’s Theme—"From the Mountains to the Sea…We are GFWC-NC"-- to create models of iconic North Carolina scenes, complete with terrain and scenery.

Arts Festival attendees were able to create crafts demonstrated by the Burlington clubwomen. Two crafts featured elements of recycling/reusing. One craft used empty wine bottles into which strands of tiny lights were inserted. The outsides of the bottles were then embellished with an assortment of stickers or etchings. The second craft gave participants reusable canvas shopping bags. They then selected from a wide variety of nature design stencils to turn their bags into masterpieces. Both crafts were truly stunning!
Guest speakers were Pamela Smith and Patricia Wood, representing the American Heart Association. These ladies are twins who are identical in every way, even having the same type of heart attack. They reminded us about symptoms and prevention for this deadly disease. And an Arts Festival would not be complete without the art. Clubwomen from District Four entered photography, painting and many crafts into competition. In addition, some clubs sponsored artwork from their area middle and high schools. It was all amazing and the judges had trouble selecting the winners. Those entries receiving blue ribbons will go on to compete at the GFWC-NC (State) arts festival in March.

Our District Arts Festival always includes the presentation of awards to deserving clubs and clubwomen. Our newest award is the District Four Communications and Information Award. Clubs were asked to list five tools of communication that they use to reach either the public or their own members. The winner of this award for work in 2022 is Sedgefield Woman’s Club.

The District Clubwoman of the Year Award is given annually to honor a clubwoman who has given of her time, talents, interest, organizational efforts, and active participation to render outstanding service through the Federation. The winner for 2022 is Fran Pollock of the Sedgefield Woman’s Club.
